What Is Generalized Anxiety Disorder?

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is a mental health condition characterized by excessive and uncontrollable worry or anxiety about a wide range of everyday events and situations. People with GAD often find it difficult to control their anxiety and may experience physical symptoms such as restlessness, muscle tension, fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, and sleep disturbances.

The worry associated with GAD is typically disproportionate to the actual likelihood or impact of the feared event, and it can interfere significantly with daily functioning and quality of life. The exact cause of GAD is not fully understood, but it is believed to involve a combination of genetic, biological, environmental, and psychological factors.

Treatment for GAD often involves a combination of therapy, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and medication, such as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) or benzodiazepines. Lifestyle changes, stress management techniques, and relaxation exercises may also be beneficial in managing symptoms of GAD.
